Friendly Beauty: What Does Vegan and Cruelty-free mean?

So, whats Vegan?

Being vegan is about more than just the diet, its about avoiding all animal products. This means food, beauty products, household products, shoes, bags, everything! Some things are clearly labeled but others can be easy to miss.

“But why does this affect me? I’m not vegan..”

Regardless of your lifestyle choices, choosing vegan-friendly products benefit you beyond a moral standpoint. When there are animal derived ingredients in a product,  it is impossible to fully track exactly where it has come from, how it could have been altered by the animal and its circumstances. Quality control and source purity can be very hard to establish. With Vegan products usually being made from natural or organic ingredients means that they are gentle on the skin, instead of harsh artificial chemical ingredients that are usually found in commercial skin care products.

But

Just because something is vegan doesn’t make it cruelty-free. After being vegan for many years this was something I only found out fairly recently. I just assumed the two went hand and hand. But unfortunately, they don’t. The term Vegan is not regulated therefore can be to show there are no animal-derived products but doesn’t always mean they are cruelty-free.

So whats cruelty-free?

It means that at no stage in the line has any products or ingredient been tested on animals, either by the company or a 3rd party company. Some brands have “required by law” testing, which the final product is tested on animals by a 3rd party to comply with different regionals and laws.

It's always important to check the company is certified as vegan and cruelty-free. You can also search companies on PETA’s website here http://features.peta.org/cruelty-free-company-search/index.aspx. You will find us proudly on there.

Being vegan and cruelty-free is at the core of our moral standpoint here at white rabbit. It always has been and it always will be!
